An exhibition of original watercolours & soft-pastel paintings born from an appreciation of the beautiful scenery in and around the Lake District. This collection attempts to capture the colours, mood & drama of the various seasons and the changes they affect across the landscape of the Lakes.
Greg has been painting & illustrating in watercolour & pastel for over thirty years and considers himself very lucky to have been raised in one of the most picturesque areas of the U.K, the Scottish Borders. He has since lived in the Derbyshire Peak District and is now based in the Lake District. Due to this, he has never been short of inspiration and landscapes were an obvious choice of subject for him.
‘As a young child some of my fondest memories were of times spent climbing mountains which is a passion that has carried on into my adult life. This has meant that from a very young age I have been regularly exposed to scenery that literally takes your breath away – even more so if you have just climbed 3-4000 feet to get to it!
I have however always been aware that unfortunately the vast majority of people will never see many of these places so in some small way I try to pass these precious memories and experiences on through my work because I am very passionate about helping people to appreciate the natural beauty of the beautiful countryside that we are so lucky to have in abundance here in the U.K. If you appreciate where you live you will look after it a little better.’
‘As a fan of the atmospheric landscapes of Turner, I feel an exhibition at Brantwood, the final home of one of Turner’s biggest fans, John Ruskin would be an honour. Not only was Ruskin a lifelong advocate of Turner but he was also a respected critic and patron of the arts, so where better in the Lakes to exhibit paintings of the Lake District than Brantwood.’
Greg also provides tuition through a series of watercolour and soft pastel workshops at Brantwood every year (Further details & booking: https://greghoward.gallery/lake-district-watercolour-workshops/) as well as through his online watercolour academy (For further details go to: https://greghoward.gallery/watercolour-academy/ )
